Caption :

Lake Manytch Gudilo, Russia October 1994. Part of the Lake Manytch Gudilo and a series of interconnected lakes and canals (elongated feature that extends horizontally) can be traced across the bottom third of the image. Located in the semiarid steppe farmlands (large, angular field patterns) of southwest Russia, this series of lakes and canals are oriented in a northwest-southeast alignment. Even though this region of Russia shows a high degree of intensive agriculture, primarily cereal grains, a large percent of the landscape is karst topography. The gently curving feature near the middle of the image is the Kalaus River drainage basin that eventually merges with the eastern extension of the interconnecting lakes and streams (lower left quadrant). The white features are dry lakebeds
